What Is a Langkawi Sunset Cruise? What Happens on Board?
A Langkawi sunset cruise is more than a yacht trip to watch the sunset. You head out in the afternoon to enjoy the scenery around Langkawi in the Andaman Sea, with water activities arranged during the cruise. After that, you can enjoy a buffet dinner on board, followed by music and a party as the sun sets.
Most sunset cruises run from around 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, lasting approximately four hours. The cruise will depart from the jetty at 4:00 PM sharp, so please arrive at the jetty at least 30 minutes earlier for check-in and boarding.
Enjoy the Sea Views as You Set Sail
Once the yacht leaves the jetty, you can relax on the open deck, chat with your companions and take photos. During the day, you will have views of the surrounding islands and passing boats. As evening approaches, the colours of the sky and sea begin to change!
The experience takes place mainly on board the yacht. Unlike an island-hopping tour, there are no stops to explore different islands along the way. Instead, the focus is on enjoying the yacht ride, the scenery, and the changing views throughout the journey.
Join the Water Activities
When the yacht reaches the designated area, the crew will organise the water activities and provide life jackets for guests taking part. Activities vary between yachts, but common options include:
- Jacuzzi Net: Enjoy the water from a net alongside or behind the yacht, following the crew’s instructions. This is different from the netting at the front of some yachts where guests sit or lie down for photos.
- Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP): Paddle your way through open waters.
- Swimming and Jumping into the Sea: These activities take place only at the times and locations permitted by the crew. Guests should not jump from the yacht whenever they choose.
- Banana Boat: Included in some packages. Check the activity list for your chosen yacht.
You may also be able to try water sports cars (“Water Ferrari”), jet skis, Pikachu rides and UFO rides. These are optional activities charged separately. Ask the staff during the cruise about availability and prices.
If you plan to get into the water, bring swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes. Toilets are available on board for changing. If you prefer to stay dry, you can remain on the yacht to chat, relax or take photos. There is no need to join every activity.
Have Dinner on Board
Sunset cruise packages include dinner, although the menu varies from yacht to yacht.
There are alcohol-inclusive and non-alcoholic packages. If you do not drink alcohol, you can choose a non-alcoholic package, with drinks such as mocktails, Coke and Sprite.
Drinks listed in your selected package are served on a free-flow basis. The available selection depends on the yacht’s drinks menu, so check what is included before booking.
Watch the Sunset Before Returning to the Jetty
As evening approaches, head to the deck to enjoy the views, take photos and watch the sunset before the yacht returns to the jetty.
The sunset looks different every day. Sometimes you can watch the sun slowly disappear below the horizon. On cloudier days, you may mainly see the changing colours across the sky and sea. Bright orange and pink skies are not guaranteed on every cruise.
How Is a Sunset Cruise Different from Island Hopping?
Island hopping usually involves travelling by speedboat between islands and sightseeing stops, with time to go ashore and watch eagles from the boat. For example, you might visit the beach at Pulau Beras Basah, stop at Pulau Dayang Bunting and then continue to the next location. Some packages also include snorkelling equipment or fishing, depending on the itinerary you choose.
A sunset cruise focuses on the yacht experience, bringing sea views, water activities and dinner together in one trip. Apart from joining the water activities, you spend most of your time on board, chatting, taking photos and enjoying the sunset. It is not an island-by-island sightseeing route.
Both experiences involve going out to sea, but the focus is different. Choose island hopping if you want to go ashore and explore different stops. Choose a sunset cruise if you want an afternoon on a yacht, with time for water activities, dinner and sunset views.
For a more relaxed schedule, you can arrange the two activities on separate days. If your time in Langkawi is limited and you would like to experience both, it may be possible to do them on the same day. Before booking, check whether your island-hopping tour returns in time for sunset cruise check-in. Allow enough time to travel between jetties, change clothes and take a break.
